A 21-year veteran of the Sweetwater County Sheriff's Office announced his intent to campaign for Sweetwater County Sheriff.
John Grossnickle, a Republican originally from Cheyenne, holds a bachelor of arts degree in criminal justice from Chadron State College and a master of science degree in criminal justice, law enforcement administration from Columbia College.
Grossnickle is currently a Lieutenant over the patrol and detective divisions at the sheriff's office. He started his career in 1996 with the Rock Springs Police Department and took a position with the county sheriff's office in May of 1997. During the last 21 years at the sheriff's office, he said he implemented many aspects of the current practices and programs it utilized by the office.
Grossnickle believes law enforcement is an extension of the people.
"Even though the law is outlined in state statute, the citizen is an essential part of maintaining a safe and secure community," he said in his campaign announcement. "Community meetings with residents in order to determine issues that persist within the individual neighborhoods is a priority and must be implemented."
Grossnickle said with open communication and education many issues can be resolved and possibly avoided, but also believes it's impossible for law enforcement to focus on community issues if they're unknown.
Grossnickle also believes the safety of children is of utmost importance, saying parents need to be education about the dangers children face and how to be vigilant in guarding against those dangers.
Along with being a executive board member of the Wyoming Peace Officers Association, Grossnickle has volunteered his time with many youth athletics programs. He is in his sixth year as president of the Archie Hay Post 24 American Legion baseball program. The program was on the verge of shutting down, but with ideas Grossnickle implemented and with the help of others, the program is now running strong. Grossnickle is in his 22nd year as a Wyoming High School Activities Association official and has coached baseball, football and track. He has helped with other local events and organizations.
"I believe in this great community of Sweetwater County," Grossnickle said. "I am committed to helping to achieve a better and safer place for all of us to live."
