Falling short of their goal to take the state title this year, the Green River High School boys soccer team still showed they were a strong squad in Jackson.
The boys took third at State, finishing behind Cheyenne Central and the championship team from Natrona County High School.
The Wolves started the tournament with an explosive 4-0 win over Cheyenne East, the fourth-seeded team from 4A East. Cheyenne Central would earn a hard-fought shootout victory over Kelly Walsh, leading to a confrontation with the Wolves in the semifinals.
That match didn’t go the Wolves’ way and after a close game, the Wolves fell to the Indians 2-1.
Contending for third place, the Wolves faced the Laramie Plainsmen, following the Plainsmen’s loss to a Natrona squad coming into the semifinals after a tremendous 4-1 upset victory against Thunder Basin, the top seeded team from 4A East. Green River ended their run on a high note, shutting out Laramie in a 2-0 win.
Players had a number of accolades at the end of the season. According to stats tallied prior to State on Wyopreps.com, Chase Stoeger was fifth in Wyoming for the number of goals scored during the season. Stoeger earned 10 goals, sharing the spot with two other players. Haden Counts and Gregory Marchal also appear on the list. Counts was seventh on the list with eight goals, sharing the spot with two other players, while Gregory was listed eighth with seven goals, sharing that spot with four others.
Patrick Marchal had the sixth highest number of saves during the season. Patrick earned 77 saves as the Wolves’ goalie. Chava Sanchez was 10th with 37 saves.
The team had a +13 score differential for the season, scoring 25 goals and allowing 12 to be scored on them.
The team loses nine seniors at the end of the season: John Makie, Alec Barlow, Ivan Escalante, Alex Davis, Christian Alatorre, Manuel Lopez, Eliel Ibarra, Patrick and Gregory Marchal.
Seven players were All Conference selections. Those players were Alatorre, Counts, Davis, Erik Gwaltney, Chase Stoeger and both Marchal brothers.
