Queen for a day

Over the last 100 years, Lillian Sanders has seen a lot of changes.

On May 3, Sanders turned 100 and she celebrated it on Saturday with a small party at Mission at Castle Rock Rehabilitation Center.

Sanders was excited as family members and friends came in to give her a hug and visit with her. She didn't even have time for cupcakes, punch or to try any light snacks while she was busy shaking hands and hugging people.

She was wearing a crown, sash and a fur-lined robe as she greeted her guests with a queen-like wave.

"You're only 100 once," she said.

Even though Sadners was asked numerous times by her guests what her secret to living 100 was, she declined to give out any tips. She would simply laugh, then smile and say something like "wouldn't you like to know?"

When she was asked how she maintained her youthful appearance she'd respond to her guests.

"It's a secret," Sanders would whisper to them.

Sanders is originally from Rochester, N.Y. When she was younger she worked in the retail business. She moved to Sweetwater County when her husband took a job out a Stauffer Chemical and she's been in this county for the past 50 years. Prior to coming to Sweetwater County, they were living in New Mexico.

Some of the huge changes Sanders has seen over the years include the increased use of electricity, telephones and automobiles. She said she can still recall how she first used the telephone and was amazed at how quickly everyone was able to use them.

Throughout her life, Sanders enjoyed dancing and it's something she'd still do if she could.

"I can't anymore, but I did. Every weekend I'd be out dancing," she said. "I like to do a lot of things, but I can't."

Sanders said her body is starting to fail her, but she's enjoyed her life and would like to live another 10 or 20 years if possible.
