The Green River Lady Wolves soccer team traveled to Worland for its tournament last weekend and came home with three wins and one loss.
The Lady Wolves finished the tournament in ninth place out of 14 teams competing. The Lady Wolves fell to their first game against Douglas, 4-2, and won the rest of their games against Pinedale, 4-2, Riverton, 3-2 and Rawlins, 2-0.
Head coach Tracy Wyant said the overall play of the Lady Wolves was good this weekend.
“I feel we dominated every single game,” Wyant said.
She said the Lady Wolves averaged 30 plus shots on goal for each game, but the balls just didn’t seem to be going in.
“We were missing opportunities,” she said. “We were struggling to get the ball in the net. It just wouldn’t go. It wasn’t for a lack of effort.”
The first game against Douglas was cold and snowy and both teams had to deal with 2 inches of snow on the ground. Only the lines on the field were swept off, making it a miserable game. Wyant said in this game they outshot Douglas three to one and outplayed them, but they still lost.
“We just could not finish,” Wyant said.
Despite this loss, Wyant is still happy with the way the team played. She feels they have finally found a new formation that will work and it’s one they are going to stick with.
“We can always adjust it if we need to,” she said. “It depends on our opponent.”
Four games is a lot of games to play in a weekend, but the girls didn’t lose momentum.
“Fatigue wasn’t a big issue for us,” Wyant said.
She brought along seven junior varsity players to give the team more depth and all of them played this weekend. Wyant said this is good experience for them since they are the future varsity squad.
Another plus with participating in non-conference play is the team tried different things they may not try in a conference game situation or during practice.
“You can’t simulate games in practice,” she said.
All of these games helped get the Lady Wolves used to the pressure and stress of the game. It was also a way for the Lady Wolves to build confidence.
Scoring the goals this weekend were Chezney Mamalis, Carly Kettering and Raena Finch.
This weekend the Lady Wolves will play Natrona County and Kelly Walsh in away games.
To prepare for these games, Wyant said she will have the girls work on finishing the play.
