Focusing on new humanitarian projects is something the sewing group at the Golden Hour Senior Center makes a priority.
Every Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., including a break for lunch, the sewing group meets at the GHSC. The group varies from week to week. Some enjoy coming in the morning, while others prefer the afternoon. Regardless of what time they come in, they are ready to create items for others. The items they sew for others have been come to be known as their humanitarian projects.
Shirley Okerson, who says she is not a teacher of the class, but someone who shows others how to make new projects, picks out different projects for the class to work on.
Their latest project is directed at the homebound residents and senior citizens who are a part of the center's home delivered meals program.
So far, the group has made 14 no-sew, cut-and-tie fleece blankets for the homebound residents. They were proud to say all of the fleece was donated to them to make the blankets.
With all of the fleece used up, the group refocused it's efforts and started making afghans out of yarn that was donated to them. Each week, the group learns how to make a different stitch.
This week, the group was working on various projects. Some were making washcloths, while others were working on their afghans.
Okerson then showed the ladies their next project, a gift bag tote. She had already made a red one with lady bug accent fabric on it so they could see what the finished product looked like.
Class participants were excited about the gift-bag tote because they were actually going to make it for themselves.
Most already had ideas of how they were going to use them, which included putting their sewing and crafting items in them to carry back and forth to the senior center. Other participants thought they would not only make one for themselves, but for a friend.
Those who would like to make this gift bag will want to attend the April 4 and 18 classes. On April 4 they will cut all of the fabric, which the participant will need to purchase ahead of time, while on April 18, the project will be sewn together.
