Library volunteer group forms in Green River

Micki Gilmore wants to help the library she’s loved and worked at.

Gilmore was a librarian at the Sweetwater County Library in Green River and was instrumental in developing a number of beloved library programs, including the popular ghost walks and medieval faire.

Gilmore retired last year, but has always wanted to help the library. This desire led her to form the Green River Library Volunteers group, which aims to support Green River’s library.

The group is a subcommittee of the Sweetwater County Library Foundation, a nonprofit organization dedicated to fundraising for the library system. Gilmore said her group will specifically help the Sweetwater County Library. Her first challenge is letting people know what she’s working on.

“I’m trying to get the word out,” she said.

Gilmore wants to conduct fundraising events and volunteer for programs to aid the library. Some ideas she and a few others have brainstormed already include creating baby bags with books for the mothers of newborns, fundraising for a new front desk and bringing back the Ghost Walk.

“They’re one of the things people have been asking me about,” she said.

She said one of the biggest goals the group will have is to raise money for the library.

During an informal meeting March 6, Gilmore attracted half a dozen people interested in joining the group. One man, Mike Kinniburgh, said it was the only place he could check out audio books for his travels.

“This is the only library I can check out some talk and tapes and they’ll let me send them back,” he said. “They help me pass the time on long trips.”
