The Wolves won't be going to State this weekend.
The boys basketball team lost their first-round game against Natrona County High School Thursday in Jackson. In their second straight defeat by the Mustangs, the Wolves lost in heartbreaking fashion, 58-56.
Despite a promising start to the season, the Wolves have struggled during the past few weeks. Their conference record slipped to 4-6 by the end of the season. The Wolves also lost five of their last six regular-season games, with the only win in that set coming from a home victory against the Rock Springs Tigers during Make-A-Wish Night Feb. 15. Beyond those games, the last winning weekend the Wolves had was in Natrona County Feb. 2-3, where the Wolves defeated both Natrona and Kelly Walsh.
The team will lose six members to graduation. Those leaving are Gavin Heiser, Chance Hofer, Dakota Wingard, Cameron Morris, Devin Love and Jake Angelovich.
Love and Hofer were ranked fifth and sixth respectively for scoring in the 4A West Conference, both averaging 11.9 points per game. Angelovich and junior Chase Stoeger were ranked ninth and 10th respectively in rebounding in the conference, both averaging 4.5 rebounds per game. Stoeger is listed as No. 4 in assists within the conference, averaging 2.6 per game, while Heiser and Hofer were ranked sixth and seventh in the conference with an average of 2.4 assists per game.
Morris was ranked sixth in conference for steals, averaging 1.9 per game, while Hofer ranked eighth with 1.8. Angelovich and Stoger were in the top 10 for blocked shots in the conference. Angelovich ranked second with 1.1 per game, while Stoeger ranked 10th with 0.5 per game. Junior Matthew Seymour was third in the conference for three-point shooting percentage, making 42 percent of his shots.
Junior Braxton Yeager was third in the conference for field goal percentage, making 55 percent of his shots, while Angelovich and Hofer were listed as fifth and sixth. Angelovich made 54 percent of his field goal attempts, while Hofer scored with 53 percent. Stoger and Hofer also made the top 10 in free throws, with Stoger being ranked eighth with 72 percent success from the free-throw line and Hofer ranked 10 with 71 percent.
