The team may not have come home with a top three finish, but the coach is proud of what they accomplished this season.
“(I) just want to say how proud I am to have coached this team. You are fighters to the end,” head coach Colleen Seiloff posted on the teams’ Facebook page. “Also, thank you to everyone who has supported us throughout the season. It has been amazing. We have lots to celebrate at our banquet. Hope to see all you there.”
During state this past weekend, which took place in Laramie, the team competed against some tough teams.
In a previous interview, Seiloff said the three teams to beat at state would be Laramie High School, Thunder Basin High School and Kelly Walsh High School. She was right. The teams finished in the order predicted with Green River claiming fourth place.
“I thought it went really well,” Seiloff said. “I don’t know if I could have asked for much more out of this team. They fought to the bitter end.”
Some of them were competing sick. She said they are not using it as excuse, but it did play a part. She thought they would have broken into the top three had they not been fighting illnesses.
“They didn’t use it as an excuse,” she said.
For seniors Ethan Moffatt, Coleton Spalding, Miles Moffat and Logan Johnson it was the end of a high-school swimming career and they ended it by placing in the top 12 in their events at state.
Moffatt finished his career strong with a first-place finish in the 100-yard breaststroke.
A couple of other swimmers who stood out at the state meet where Michael Richmond with a second-place finish in the 200-yard IM and fourth in the 100-yard freestyle, while teammate James King took second in the 100-yard butterfly and third in the 50-yard freestyle. Moffatt, James and Richmond were all named All-State swimmers.
The 200-yard medley relay team, consisting of Richmond, Moffatt, King and Lane Hutchinson, finished second, while the 400-yard freestyle relay team, consisting of King, Dean Lyon, Lane Hutchison and Richmond, finished third. Laramie’s team, which took first in this event, set a new state record with a time of 3:10.49. The previous record was set in 1999.
Three school records were broke at state -- Richmond broke a school record in 100-freestyle, Moffatt broke the record in 100-breaststroke and 200-medley relay record was broken by the team consisting of Richmond, Ethan Moffatt, James King, Lane Hutchison. Those school records were set in 2001 with a great group of swimmers, Seiloff said.
“That says a lot about our group,” she said. “That’s something to be proud.”
“We’re a young team and the good news is we get to come back next year with a good team,” Seilioff said. “We moved up from last year and we just continue to improve each year.”
