Wolves swimmers head to Laramie for state

Twelve Green River High School swimmers and three divers have qualified for state and are ready to see what this weekend’s competition will bring.

The team will travel to Laramie to compete at state to wrap up their season. Last Thursday the team competed at the last chance meet in Pinedale. The team was unable to qualify anymore even though there were a few on the team that were so close.

“I’m happy with it. We were really hoping for a couple more at last chance,” head coach Colleen Seiloff said. “It’s more than we’ve had in the past several years. We’re definitely going with a strong team.”

The team is where they need to be at for this time of the year. Seiloff is hoping all of those on the team who have been battling colds or the flu are better by this weekend.

She’s also hoping none of the others catch the colds before state. She said the swimmers who were not feeling well this weekend have been able to attend school and they are looking like they feel better.

“It’s been a rough season this year,” Seiloff said. “They’re ready to go and see what they’ve worked hard for.”

Seiloff is proud to have three divers, Coleton Spalding, Alex Grajada and Miles Moffat, qualified for state this year. When it comes down to points, it’s important to have as many qualified in as many events as possible.

“We’re hoping all three will be in the top 12,” she said.

At state, the swimmers compete in preliminary rounds. All of those who make it into the top 12 advance to finals for a chance to obtain a medal. Seiloff said in order for the team to advance as many as they can, not only do the top swimmers have to swim their best, but so do the medium-level swimmers.

Seiloff said she believes the teams that will bring the most competition are Kelly Walsh, Laramie and Thunder Basin.

“Those three teams are tough,” she said. “They’ve got some great swimmers.”

However, she knows her team is strong and they will be contenders too.
