The Green River High School Indoor Track team started its 2018 season Friday at the Weber State High School Invitational.
This was one of the largest meets in the region with as many as 140 competitors in an individual event, featuring performers from Utah, Idaho and Wyoming, including a large contingent from Star Valley, Evanston, Green River and Rock Springs.
With many of the spring track season athletes competing in winter sports and the weather canceling the team bus only those competitors that could travel with their parents to the meet were able to compete. Green River was able to field a small team of both boys and girls.
On the boys side, in the 55-meter sprint, five seniors competed with Chauncy Hunt leading the way in 22nd place at 7.11, Kyle Cacho in 24th at 7.14, Cole White taking 30th at 7.17 and Noah Lewis, 49th at 7.31, out of 127 sprinters in the field. In the girls’ 55-meter sprint, senior McKenzie Davison finished 39th in the field of 118 sprinters at 8.23.
In the 200-meter dash the boys were led by Lewis at 25.91 out of a field of 137 sprinters. None of the Lady Wolves competed in the 200 meters from Green River.
In the grueling 400-meter run, White took 16th with a time of 55.98. For the girls, there was only one competitor from Green River, Davison, who finished in 13th place out of 65 runners at a time of 1:06.14.
In the field events, the top performance for the Wolves was turned in on the boys side with Cacho taking third place in the field of 62 long jumpers with an excellent early season jump of 20.05.
Junior Jarrod Shoemaker finished 44th in the field of 62 with a jump of 15’.8”.
In the throws for the boys, senior Placido Mena led the way in the shot put, finishing 39th in the field of 85, followed by sophomore Tito Mena in 41st with Shoemaker taking 65th at 28’6” and sophomore Ty Alcorn 74th at 23’2”.
Finally, the girls had a large contingent of 10 throwers, led by senior Natasha Young finishing 10th with a good early season throw of 31’6”. This was followed by Cassidy Gomez, Alaina Maiers, Alexis Martin, Kim Peterson, Janae Neff, Bella Knight, Maisie Davis, Guadalupe Ramirez-Galvan and Kayla Carver.
Hoping for better weather, the team will again head south into Utah for the prestigious Kearns Invitational Indoor Track Meet Friday.
