Kids given hats senior citizens made

Children will have nice, warm hats to wear this winter thanks to a group of senior citizens.

Last Wednesday, seniors representing Golden Hour Senior Center stopped by the Sweetwater County Child Developmental Center's Green River facility to donate 120 hats.

Senior Shirley Okerson said the knitted, crocheted or loomed hats were made by more than 30 volunteers. The volunteers not only made hats for the CDC, but Truman Elementary School.

While at the center, children picked out hats they liked and quickly put them on for a photo. Although the kids liked the hats, they weren't so crazy about sitting down to take a photo, but that didn't make the occasion any less enjoyable.

"We are have enjoyed these projects of making and giving hats to Truman's children and the Child Developmental Center," Okerson said. "It has brought us satisfaction and joy."

Okerson who doesn't consider herself a teacher, but someone just showing others how to do something, said they all learned how to make the hats from loomahat.com.

This year, the group has moved onto a new website called knittingboard.com.

They are making 8-inch squares of different patterns.

These 8-inch square will then be sewn together to make scarves or afghans.

Even though most of those who made hats used the looms, not everyone did.

"We have very talented crocheters and knitters who also donated their hats," she said.

Most of the hats were made during the sewing group at the senior center, however, some of the seniors got so into it that they continued sewing them during the regular craft class too.

"We would like to thank each and everyone who donated loom and yarn to the Golden Hour sewing group," she said. "We could have not done this without you."
