The annual Thoman wrestling tournament started strong for the Green River Wolves, as the team dominated the Pool A portion of the tournament.
However, the Wolves slipped during the Gold Bracket, falling to Uintah High School and Rock Springs High School to take third.
Green River started strong against Worland, defeating the team 49-19 in the first round. The team would see similar successes through Friday competition, defeating Evanston, Uintah 2, Mountain View and Rock Springs 2 in dominating fashion.
During the second day of competition, Green River started the morning with a bye, allowing them to rest for competition against Cokeville, which the Wolves defeated 64-12. However, once the Gold Bracket started, the Wolves struggled with Rock Springs High School, a team that defeated the Wolves in a close 40-33 competition. The Wolves' struggles continued when facing Uintah High School, who defeated Green River 56-12.
During the Best of the Best competition, Payton Tucker saw success as part of the Brown Team, defeating Pablo Escalante of Evanston in the 182 weight class.
Tucker's teammates Clayson Mele and Jon Ty Leininger also made the cut to compete at the Best of the Best, but were both defeated in their respective weight classes.
The wrestlers will travel to Uintah High School in Utah for competition in the coming weekend, starting a long series of meets that will have the Wolves traveling through the remainder of the month.
The next home wrestling meet will take place against Evanston Jan. 31.
