The Wolves hit the road for their second consecutive week for a long road trip to take on the Jackson Broncs.
On paper, they were the superior team, but they did not let up from the opening whistle until near the end of the first half when they had the game well in hand with a dominating first half performance on offense, defense and special teams.
The Wolves won the toss and elected to receive. Anthony Johnson got the ball near the 25-yard line, showing good speed and a nifty move around mid-field, resulting in a 75 yards for a touchdown.
Jackson got the ball, but got nowhere as they went three and out as Mitchell Dallin Serrano, Justin Rubalcaba, Candon Croft and Chance Anderson among others held the Broncs to negative one yard on three plays.
Jackson then punted to Green River and on the first play from scrimmage for the Wolves’ Kyle Ivie who was returning to the lineup from injury, showed his speed and took the ball 68 yards for a score. The route was on as Green River took a 14-0 lead before Jackson knew what hit them.
Jackson then sustained a drive with a series of short runs before the Wolves defense led by Anderson with help from Erik Gwaltney, sophomore Thomas Harvey and company forced them into another punt.
The top passing quarterback in 3A lost no time as Chance Hofer hooked up with one of the top receivers in 3A in fellow senior Devin Love for a 37-yard reception and run, when several penalties later, Hofer again found Love this time for a 33-yard touchdown to make it 21-0 with Gwaltney’s third PAT kick just before the end of the first quarter.
The Broncs got the ball back and again went four and out and the Wolves made another quick strike as Hofer connected with Anthony Johnson who caught a tipped ball on the first play of the series for a 24-yard touchdown reception after Gwaltney added the extra point.
Things were to get no better for Jackson as on their next offensive possession Anthony Mitchell pressured the Jackson quarterback who threw a bad pass which was intercepted by Love.
Croft running hard gained three yards, then Ivie again showed his explosiveness with a 25-yard touchdown run to make the score 35-0 after the point after.
Once more, Green River’s tough big-play defense stopped Jackson with Dakota Wingard making some big plays and Love knocking down a pass to turn the ball right back to the Wolves.
The Wolves’ offense showing their complete dominance scored quick with Love coming up with another big reception from Hofer for 35 yards and another reception for Love.
Jackson’s offense took over and again the Wolves big play defense asserted itself as Thomas Harvey recovered a fumble and returned it 70 yards for a touchdown extending the gap to an amazing 49-0 lead with nearly five minutes left in the first half.
Coach Maggi made the decision to pull his starters before halftime and rest them for next Friday’s crucial conference championship matchup at home against the undefeated and number one ranked Star Valley Braves.
The Green River junior varsity players were able to get lots of varsity experience as they played more than a half of football.
The defense had trouble containing Jackson’s ball control offense as the team’s 5’7” 137lb. sophomore running back Jeydon Cox showed excellent speed and quickness as well as some amazing endurance as he carried the ball 42 times for 308 yards against the Wolves.
The Wolves junior varsity players faired much better on offense led by backup quarterback Serrano with two more touchdowns scored and eventual convincing one sided 62-44 victory.
In addition to the win, Green River secured the No. 2 seed throughout the playoffs as Evanston was defeated by Powell.
Green River hopes to fill Wolves Stadium Friday night as they take on the defending state champions, Star Valley.
