The Green River Lady Wolves volleyball team continues to improve its defense with every game.
This past week, the Lady Wolves took on Evanston, Jackson and Laramie. They won their games against Evanston, 21-25, 26-24, 16-25, 25-18, 15-12, and Jackson, 25-21, 25-7, 25-16, and lost against Laramie, 23-25, 13-25, 22-25.
"This matchup is always a rival type game," head coach Rikki Shantz said about Evanston. "We hit the ball a lot better in this game. Defense is getting better every game."
Even though the team did do well defensively, they were missing to many serves, she said. Another area the Lady Wolves need to focus on staying on, is staying on top when they have the lead.
"We have a few injuries that we have been dealing with," she said. "The whole game was a process of getting used to playing together."
During the game against Jackson, the Lady Wolves were trying to stay focused on minimizing their mistakes. It was the first time the team played Jackson this year, but they didn't adjust their game. Shantz said they just wanted to go into the game and remain focused on playing good volleyball. The strategy worked.
The Jackson game was at home and Shantz said the team enjoyed having the cheerleaders there for the first part of the game because the extra cheering really helped.
"Hopefully we can keep building to a huge student section," she said.
Finally, the Lady Wolves took on Laramie, the No.1 ranked team in the state, for their last game of the week and lost.
"It was our third game in so many days. I felt like we might be tired," Shantz said. "The girls came out and battled really well. It was the best defense we have played all year."
The Lady Wolves continue to improve and they were close in two out of the three sets.
Shantz said the team not only played defense well, but battled through injuries some of the Lady Wolves are currently facing.
The team continues to improve, which is what the coach wants to see.
"We know we were building to something great," Shantz said. "We have seen some great Volleyball the last couple of weeks."
The Lady Wolves will take on Rock Springs tonight at 6 p.m. at the Rock Springs High School.
