The Green River High School tennis team may have had some struggles at regionals in Cheyenne last weekend, but the team finished strong, taking third place in both the boys and girls divisions.
On the boys side, the team took third with 38 points, finishing behind the tied teams from Laramie High School and Cheyenne Central, which both scored 52 points. For the girls, the Lady Wolves scored 38 points as well, getting edged out of second place by Cheyenne Central with 39 points and behind Central, which dominated the tournament with 67 points.
Boys
Patrick Marchal, who plays in the Singles No. 2 division, remains undefeated for the season, while one doubles team was able to reach the top of its consolation bracket.
In Singles No. 1 action, Gregory Marchal was defeated by Torrington’s Ethan Creagar in his first match. He would make his way to the second round of the consolation bracket before being knocked out of the tournament by Brian Joelson of Cheyenne Central. Joelson would go on to win that consolation bracket.
In the Boys Doubles No.1 competition, the team of Jarrett Atkins and Danny Christensen took second, defeating teams from Cheyenne East and Central, making their way to the finals against a Laramie-based duo. The two fell short against Laramie, with their championship match ending in two sets, 6-1 and 6-1.
For Boys Doubles No. 2, Elliott Potter and Job Leininger fell early to East’s team of Jefferson Danso and Jacob Wozney, a repeat of their meeting at Cheyenne East Sept. 9. The team was able to take down the team from Rawlins in their first round of consolation play, but were defeated in their next round by South’s Anthony Guzman and PJ Vigil.
The team of Jordan Anderson and Brett McKeehan earned the top spot in the consolation bracket in Boys Doubles No. 3 competition. The two started the tournament against their rivals from Rock Springs, defeating them and moving up to a match with Central’s Bodhi Gibson and Brock Storebo. Like their meeting with the two Sept. 9, Anderson and McKeehan were handed the loss to the eventual regional champions. They started in the second round of consolation play against East’s Kaiden Brown and Ricky Shafer, defeating them and their next opponents, Chad Hansen and Toran Flores from Rawlins, to earn the top spot in the bracket.
Boys seeding for the upcoming state tournament has been released.
Gregory Marchal is slated to compete against Jesse Brown of Powell in the Singles No. 1 action. His brother Patrick Marchal will take on the unnamed eighth seed in Singles No. 2.
The team of Atkins and Christensen will start their state tournament run against a team from Cody in Doubles No. 1, while Potter and Leininger will start tournament action against Campbell County High School in Doubles No. 2. Anderson and McKeehan will also take on a team from Campbell County in Doubles No. 3.
Girls
While none of the girls made their way to the end of the tournament bracket, they still made great showings with the three doubles teams fighting their way to the top of the consolation brackets.
In Singles No. 1, Laura Cecilia fought hard to a second-place finish, overcoming Alicia Stevens from Rock Springs and Ally Franc from Laramie. Taking on Grace Dereemer from Central, Cecilia lost in two sets, 6-3 and 6-0.
Haylen Cordova saw some success in the main bracket in Singles No. 2 competition. She defeated Laramie’s Kyra Wulff before getting knocked out by eventual regional champion Kelsey Hardsocg from Central. In consolation play, Cordova fell to Rock Springs High School’s Sasha Bentley in the bracket’s second round.
In the Doubles No. 1 tournament, Alex Palmer and Kaitlyn Sharp were defeated by Courtney Smith and Rachel Shuler from Rock Springs in the first round. However, the two came back while playing through the consolation bracket, defeating Mackenzie Thompson and Selena Landa from Rawlins and Smith and Shuler in a rematch to win the bracket and third place.
Kelby Pope and Audrie Harrison made their way to the second round of tournament play in Doubles No. 2 competition. They defeated East’s Delaney Schmidt and Lindsay Eldred before falling to tournament champions Maggie Black and Caitlin Brugger from Central. The two took on Rawlins’ Chantel Flores and Bailee Thompson in the consolation bracket’s semifinals, defeating them and the team of Sera Glass and Aubree Powell from Torrington to win the bracket.
In Doubles No. 3 action, Sydney Beutel and Anna Kimball defeated Olivia Shoemaker and Brooklynn Soske from East at the start of their tournament. They lost their second match against Laramie’s Hanna Brin and Courtney Hamilton, who would go on to win the regional championship. Beutel and Kimball would face Emily Lininger and Maddie Corbitt from Rock Springs, defeating them in two sets. The pair then took on Torrington’s Sydney West and Kalli Smith to win the consolation bracket, beating West and Smith in two sets.
For the upcoming state tournament, Cecilia will take on Alyssa Baumgartner from Thunder Basin High School in Gillette in Singles No. 1 action. Cordova will battle Sheridan’s Hannah Jost at the start of the Singles No. 2 tournament. Palmer and Sharp will face Maddie Horning and Aiyanna Wolz from Natrona County High School, Pope and Harrison will take on Thunder Basin’s Kim Kern and Kealy Hill, while Kimball and Beutel will start their tournament against Jackson’s Megan Tucker and Sam Fairbanks.
The tournament takes place in Gillette and starts Thursday.
