GR victorious in Worland

The No. 2 ranked team in 3A division football, the Green River Wolves hit the road and took on the Worland Warriors in their conference opener Friday.

The Wolves, on a cold, wet night in Worland, came out on top with their third straight win of the season to remain undefeated at 3-0 overall. The Wolves have outscored their opponents to date by a score of 138-40.

The Wolves started quick as they have in each of their previous games, going up 14-0 on their first two drives, while shutting out Worland on consecutive three and out defensive stands.

On their first drive, the Wolves took just eight plays with a 12-yard pass from quarterback Chance Hofer to Candon Croft, followed by a 4-yard run by Croft for the first touchdown. Following the PAT by Erik Gwaltney, the Wolves built a quick 7-0 lead.

In Worland's first offensive series, they went three and out when Senior Chance Andersen sacked Worland's Andrew Edholm. The Wolves' offense took over and Croft, having another big game at running back, busted loose on a 37-yard run before Hofer hooked up with one of his favorite targets, Devin Love, for a 15-yard touchdown to make it 14-0.

The Wolves looked like they were on their way to an easy victory, but Green River fumbled a punt, which gave Worland excellent field position, which they took advantage of with Edholm taking the ball in for the touchdown and a 14-7 score with still half of the second quarter to go before halftime.

On the ensuing series, Worland stopped Green River and it looked like the momentum had shifted, but Worland was called for a roughing the kicker penalty on Green River's punt and the Wolves got the ball back.

The Wolves took quick advantage of the break as they marched down the field. Croft again broke out for a 15-yard run for the third Green River touchdown of the first half and a 21-7 lead.

Green River dominated both sides of the game as the defense made a big play with an interception from Cole White. He returned for 30 yards and a touchdown to give the Wolves a commanding 27-7 lead.

Worland was given one more series of downs before halftime, but the Wolves led by Andersen, Gwaltney and Dakota Wingard shut them down once more to end the half with the big lead.

The second half started with more of the same with excellent running from Croft, Hofer and Kyle Ivie as the Wolves scored again for a 33-7 lead to shut down any thoughts of a Worland comeback.

Both teams scored once more for the final score of 40-13, which put another big win in the books for the Wolves.

The Wolves return home this week to take on the Cody Broncs, who defeated Jackson in Jackson this week 57-22 to improve their conference record to 2-0.
