Knights invite brings the best

Baseball fans have a chance to watch some great action this weekend as the Green River Knights host their annual invitational tournament starting Friday.

The tournament attracts teams from throughout Southwestern Wyoming, as well as Colorado and Utah. In total, eight teams will compete during the three-day tournament. The tournament has a long tradition with the Knights and visiting teams enjoy coming to Green River, according to team manager Stub Hatfield. Hatfield said the teams from Evanston, Jackson, Riverton and Rock Springs have played competitive games throughout the season, with games ending in close scores and teams splitting double-headers.

“There will be a lot of good baseball this weekend,” Hatfield said.

Hatfield said the tournament has gotten more expensive over the years and wouldn’t be able to pull it off without support from the Sweetwater County Travel and Tourism Board. Providing umpires alone can add up he said, as two umpires needed for each game costs $120.

“We couldn’t do it without them,” Hatfield said.

So far, the Knights have struggled this season as vacation and other commitments have resulted in players not able to attend their games.

“It’s been tough on us,” Hatfield said.

Regardless, Hatfield sees the previous games the Knights have competed in as practice games and thinks the team’s small, incremental improvements game by game and getting the full A team together will mean the Knights will peak at the right time, just before the state baseball tournament in Cowley at the end of July.
