Senior center hosts flea market

The weather couldn't have been more perfect for the Golden Hour Senior Center's Flea Market Saturday morning.

The sun was shining, it was near 70 degrees with a light breeze; and people responded.

There may not have been as many booths at the Flea Market as there had been in the past, but those that were there enjoyed the nice weather and many people stopping by their tables.

The GHSC had two booths at its market. One was strictly for selling homemade baked goods, including breads, cookies, bars and pastries; and tomatoes, while the other was to sell anything the center didn't need anymore.

"We are downsizing," GHSC board chairman Margene Chew said.

The center was trying to get rid of library books, old television sets, lamps and desks, she said.

"We're just trying to freshen up the senior center," Chew said.

Chew made it clear to everyone stopping by the tables that everything was negotiable and residents could take any book they wanted. She said they were asking for donations for the books, but if there was really one they wanted they could have it.

As for the amount of people stopping by, Chew said it was steady all day.

Chew's explanation as to why there weren't as many vendors or booths is for a garage sale, it's much easier just to take the stuff out of a garage instead of loading it all up, renting a table and unpacking it to sell.

"For yard sales, you can just put a sign in the yard and sell it," Chew said.

Another reason for the low booth attendance could have been that in the past the weather wasn't favorable for the Flea Market.

During this Flea Market, one vender did have a glass vase fall down and break, but they took it with stride and said it was all part of the trade. Sometimes glass breaks, that's all part of being in the glass-making business. Other than that, things at the market seemed to be going along smoothly.
