The Green River High School Lady Wolves Soccer team secured a spot at the state tournament when they clinched the second-seed spot in the Southwest 4A conference.
Last weekend, the Lady Wolves finished the regular season by playing Natrona County and Kelly Walsh.
On Friday the Lady Wolves took on Natrona County and won, 2-0.
“I felt the game went really well,” head coach Tracy Wyant said. “Each time we meet them we know the team has improved. It doesn’t matter if we beat them the first time, we go into it as a new game.”
The team was doing really well against Natrona County, she said.
“The defense was on fire again. We were getting really good opportunities,” Wyant said.
During this game, Taylor Stoeger and Chezney Mamalis scored the two goals.
On Saturday the team had a chance to clinch the number one spot in the conference when they went up against Kelly Walsh.
“We were still fighting for that first,” Wyant said. “It was a good game at Kelly Walsh. The first time they played us it was bad.”
Wyant is referring to their fourth game of the season which was against Kelly Walsh, they lost that game 7-1.
Wyant said Kelly Walsh got their first goal with a corner shot.
“Corners are scary,” Wyant said. “I hate them.”
She said the team was marked up, but the Kelly Walsh player just happened to get her foot on the ball and got it into the net.
Stoeger answered back with a beautiful distance kick.
“The goalie wasn’t even near it,” Stoeger said.
It was all tied up and Wyant felt if they game would go into overtime they would win.
With a temperature of 87 degrees and no wind, both teams were getting overheated and fatigued, however, Wyant felt the Lady Wolves were outpacing Kelly Walsh.
That’s when Kelly Walsh had a break away. As the player was coming to the net, the Lady Wolves goalie came out to get the ball.
“The ball ricocheted off of the goalie onto the defender and into the goal,” Wyant said. “The second goal was on us.”
Wyant said the Lady Wolf defender wasn’t doing anything wrong. She was just trying to make sure the ball didn’t get into the net, which is what she is trained to do. It was just unlucky that the ball hit her foot and made its way into the goal.
“It was unfortunate. It was a big loss,” Wyant said. “The girls were really upset about it.”
However, they then turned it around and celebrated the fact that they were going to make it state.
This week the team will prepare for regionals, which will take place Thursday through Saturday in Kelly Walsh. The goal is to win as many games as they can so they get a good placing in the state bracket.
The team will work on passing, possession, defense and conditioning.
“A little bit of touch up on everything we’ve been working on,” Wyant said.
Both Green River and Kelly Walsh will have a first-round bye. On Friday the Lady Wolves will play the winner of the Evanston/Rock Springs game.
