Lincoln tracts hearing set

The two remaining tracts of land where old Lincoln High School was once located will be the subject of a public hearing May 16.

Tuesday night, the city Council approved a request to host a public hearing to determine if the city would like to vacate the two tracts of land still under city ownership. One tract of land was previously vacated and is the site of a housing development initiated by New Peak Construction. Laura Leigh, director of community development for Green River, said a representative from New Peak had expressed interest in the other two tracts and said some Council members also asked her about the property. Leigh said Tract A was vacated five years ago and while the public hearing isn’t a planning and zoning board mandate to vacate the properties, the council can direct her to draft an ordinance vacating the two tracts of land after the hearing.

Prior to the vote, resident Misti Zimmerman approached the Council and reminded members of a previous promise made that if the area behind Tract A was developed, the smaller Tract C would be turned into a walking path and small park.

“I sure hope some of you guys reconsider building us a track on Tract C,” she said.

Mayor Pete Rust said abandoning the Tract C portion of the land wouldn’t preclude it from being turned into a park.

Councilman Allan Wilson said he isn’t in favor of the tract becoming more housing, saying he hopes an interested developer decides to place a walking path and maybe a few picnic areas on the land.

“There are people who walk around the track,” he said.
