Strong plays by the Green River High School Boys Soccer Team propelled the Wolves to the finals at the Pinnacle Challengers Cup in Worland over the weekend, but a tough game against the Rock Springs Tigers ended with a 1-0 loss and a second-place finish.
For the Wolves, the tournament resulted in their first matches Friday with Douglas and Lander, which they won 3-1 and 1-0 respectively. The next day, the Wolves had a second meeting with Evanston and left a 2-1 victory, their second against the Red Devils. However, their first meeting with their Sweetwater County rivals ended their hopes for a championship in Worland.
Head coach Chris Bieber said he was pleased with the team’s performance throughout the tournament.
“We continue to work through everything,” Bieber said. “They fought and made it work.”
While Haden Counts scored the most goals of the tournament with two, other players were able to contribute to the Wolves’ success as Gregory Marchal, Alec Barlow, Christian Alatorre and Kyle Ivie scored single goals throughout the weekend of play.
With Natrona County’s visit to Green River Tuesday, the team faced the state’s leading scorer in Danny Diaz, who had scored 15 goals throughout the season prior to Tuesday’s game.
Bieber said play with other teams has given them experience in how to keep a very skilled player like Diaz in check. The Wolves overcame the challenge from Natrona County, winning the match 2-1.
An upcoming match at Jackson Hole High School was scheduled for April 18, but postponed because of ACT testing at GRHS the following day.
Bieber said the team should have a makeup date for that game finalized by the end of the week.
On April 22, the team will have a chance for revenge against Rock Springs.
The game will take place at the Rock Springs Junior High School field at noon.
