Lady Wolves aim for state

The Green River High School Lady Wolves Girls Soccer Team has set its team goal for the season -- to make it to state.

Head coach Tracy Wyant said what happened last year seemed to leave a bad taste in the mouths of the returning players. Despite having a pretty good season, the team didn’t play well at regionals, which cost the team their shot at a trip to state.

This year, Wyant and the Lady Wolves don’t want that to happen again.

“Obviously, I want them to win and I want to go to state,” Wyant said.

So far in this year’s season, the Lady Wolves have had a rough start. During the first couple of games, the team was plagued with injuries, which left Wyant no choice but to call JV players up to play. Since then, three injured players have returned to the team and she’s hoping the team will get into a flow.

As the season moves forward, Wyant has a better idea of which players are right for different positions.

“I just want the continuity there,” she said.

Even though there are three seniors returning to the team, it’s still a young team that needs to learn to work with each other. Wyant said they have juniors, but a lot of freshmen and sophomores.

“It’s a new team and a young team,” Wyant said. “There’s some changes and I think that will work itself out shortly.”

Wyant knows the team has been frustrated because they have been taking a lot of shots on goal, but those shots aren’t going in. She knows they can do it, they just need to calm down and make smart shots.

As for personal goals, Wyant said she still wants to sit down with the team and have them write down some goals they would like to complete as individuals for this season. Wyant believes it’s important for them to have their own goals to focus on, not just the team’s goals.
