Disney classic hits the GR stage

Green River residents will have the chance to see Belle, The Beast, Gaston, Cogsworth, Mrs. Potts, Chip and other great characters come to life on stage.

This week, the Green River High School Theater department is putting on the Disney classic "Beauty and the Beast."

Director Terrin Musbach said the timing of this musical was perfect since there is a new remake of "Beauty and the Beast" in movie theaters now.

This musical is geared toward families who want to be incredibly entertained, but with any classic, it's really great for all ages, she said.

"It's very similar to the cartoon version of Disney," Musbach said. "There are many opportunities for comedy, and of course, a little bit of love."

Each year, the directing team is tasked with selecting a musical to perform and this year was no different.

"The directing team loves to produce shows that demand excellence and expertise from everyone involved; this show fit the bill," Musbach said.

As with any production, there are always a few snags that come up.

This year, there was literally a snag when one of the set pieces got hung up on another one during Saturday's dress rehearsal.

No one was hurt and the set piece just needed a few screws tightened.

"'Beauty and the Beast" is a beastly show. We have spent an enormous amount of time choreographing large musical numbers with 50 third through 12th-grade students," Musbach said. "Our students work incredibly hard and are very dedicated to their craft."

With a production of this size, it's a challenge just getting all of the costumes everyone needs.

"We bought a few from the University of Wyoming, borrowed more from Cheyenne Central High School, and had about 10 parents and three students that made the majority of them," Musbach said.

"We have had six to 10 adults managing all of the costume creations and alterations. The process has been challenging, but fun."

Even though the students were rushing around quite a bit on Saturday, they seemed to be enjoying the work they were doing on and off of the set for the musical.

"I think every performance is fun for the kids to be in because they belong to something that is much bigger than them, yet they all realize they play an incredibly integral part," she said.

Performances will take place at 7 p.m. Thursday and Friday and 2 p.m. Saturday.

General admission is $7 and students and seniors tickets are $5. Tickets can be purchased in advance at the GRHS main office or at the door.

The department will also be having a silent auction during the musical.

All proceeds will help students travel to Lincoln, Neb., this summer for the International Thespian Festival, which is a weeklong theatre immersion event.
