Richmond named Athlete of the Meet
The Green River High School Boys Swimming and Diving Team had one of its best showings at a state swim meet last weekend, according to head coach Colleen Seiloff.
The Wolves took fifth, but were in a very tight race with Rock Springs and Kelly Walsh. Green River scored 145 points, Rock Springs 148 and Kelly Walsh 167.333.
“We were in it,” Seiloff said. “It’s the best state we’ve had in a while.”
One Green River swimmer was crowned state champion in two events. Michael Richmond finished on top in the 200 IM and the 100 butterfly. Richmond was also voted the athlete of the meet by the Wyoming Swim Coaches Association.
Ethan Moffatt came close to earning a state championship as well, finishing second in the 100-yard breaststroke. He finished a close 10th of a second behind Cheyenne South swimmer Kevin Muela at 59.89. Both Moffatt and Richmond were named all-state for their finishes.
In 1-meter diving, Keyan Moore took fourth in the event, while Coleton Spalding finished eighth, Miles Moffat finished 10th and Alejandro Grajeda finished 15th.
Green River also placed in the top six in the medley relay and 200-yard freestyle relay. The team of Richmond, Moffatt, Brendan Bloomquist and Lane Hutchison finished fourth in the 200-yard medley relay at a time of 1:38.76, while the same team finished fifth in the 200-yard freestyle relay at 1:32.81.
Bloomquist had a personal top six finish in the 50-yard freestyle, taking fifth in the event with a time of 22.41.
Seiloff said she’s very proud of the accomplishments the team made at state, saying the team excelled and cut time.
“It’s fun to watch their hard work pay off,” she said. “It’s been a great season and I don’t know if I could have asked for anything more.”
With the season ending, Bloomquist and Moore will graduate and leave the team. Seiloff said the two were important leaders for the team and were instrumental for the team’s success. Despite their departure, Seiloff said the team will have some strong eighth graders coming into the high school next year and with the experience other team members have gained throughout the season, looks to continue the team’s success next season.
