Team gets ready for final tourney

The Green River High School Speech and Debate Team is preparing for its final regular-season tournament.

This past weekend the team was scheduled to attend the Greybull Tournament, but due to weather conditions, the team stayed home.

“We had the kids come in on Saturday and practice and we have real momentum going. I don’t feel like missing Greybull hurt us,” head coach Carina White said.

Even though the team didn’t make it to the Greybull Tournament, they are pushing ahead and looking forward to the Worland Tournament, which will take place this weekend.

It’s one of the bigger tournaments the team competes in with 21 schools scheduled to attend and more than 300 students, the team will need to remained focused.

“This tournament is extremely important to give students a chance to compete right before state and to end on a high note,” White said.

“Cheyenne schools finished their season Saturday so I feel we have an edge competing right before state.”

This weekend, White plans on taking 59 team members to challenge the other 4A Division schools, including Rock Springs, Jackson, Riverton and Kelly Walsh.

“We are bringing everyone to this one and it will be the last time the team is together for the season at a tournament as not everyone competes at state or districts,” she said. “We will have some late practices this week to prepare. We are trying to find that one thing that they might be able to change that will take their pieces to the next level.”

Since this is the final tournament before state the team is hoping to come home with another first-place trophy to keep the momentum going.

“I think we are all excited for state and the students are going to hopefully end their season with a state championship,” White said.
