Going into the regional tournament as the favorites, the Green River Wolves ended the weekend of competition in second place, falling behind Natrona County by a slim, eight-point margin.
Natrona County finished with 214.5 points while Green River ended with 206.5.
Gage Byers and Jordan Tucker were the champions in their respective weight classes. Cyro Montoya, Justin Flores and Kaycee Cochrane took second place while Payton Tucker, Blake Waite, Justin Rubalcaba and Gabe Bunderman finished third. Tanner Adam, Eric Clingenpeel and Nick Froats finished fourth.
“We didn’t wrestle our best this weekend,” head coach Marshall Rhodes said.
“We made too many mistakes and our toughness wasn’t what it should be this time of year.”
Rhodes said the grapplers lost too many close matches they had the lead in.
While the team has a few more days of practice before going to the state tournament in Casper, Rhodes believes getting his wrestlers in the right mindset and convincing them to compete at the highest level they can is the goal.
“If we do that next weekend, I think we will be happy with the outcome,” Rhodes said.
Other wrestlers competing in the tournament were Kade Knezovich, Cody Price, Jacob Weipert, Devon VanValkenburg, Anthony Wood, Nathan McCann, Garrett Harris, Zack Orr, Chance Anderson, Brett McKeehan, Russell Ferrell, Seddon Sanders and John Makie.
