Wrestlers defeat Rock Springs

Green River High School's wrestlers proved dominant against their rivals from Rock Springs during their last home appearance before the west regional tournament.

Both the junior varsity and varsity squads won over the Rock Springs Tigers on senior night. The varsity team won the dual 49-18, while the junior varsity team earned their victory 37-24.

"Cyro Montoya, Gage Byers, Kaycee Cochrane, Eric Clingenpeel, Zack Orr, Bake Waite, Jordan Tucker, and Gabe Bunderman wrestled their last home dual as a team and it was good to beat the rival Tigers at home," head wrestling coach Marshall Rhodes said. "These guys have been a huge part of this program the past few years and they will be missed next year."

Montoya, Cochrane, Waite, Jordan Tucker and Clingenpeel earned victories during their last home dual. Other varsity wrestlers winning at home were Payton Tucker, Tanner Adam and Kade Knezovich.

In junior varsity action, Garrett Harris, Cody Price, Nathan Campos, Jacob Weipert, Brett McKeehan, and Nick Froats took home wins. Devon VanValkenburg, Russell Ferrell, and Tayler Jensen also competed Friday night.

Rhodes said the team is looking forward to a few more weeks to improve before the state tournament in Gillette. Rhodes also believes the regional tournament, which takes place next weekend, will bring more challenge to the Wolves, saying the team will need to wrestle its best to win the competition.

"We will need to get better the next few days and I expect to have a couple of our best varsity wrestlers back in the lineup after being out for a few weeks," Rhodes said.
