Wrestlers take 2nd at Thoman tourney

The Green River High School wrestlers had a chance to compete at home for the first time this year and they did not disappoint.

The Wolves hosted the annual Thoman wrestling tournament, featuring teams from Colorado, Nebraska, Utah and Wyoming.

The boys won seven of the eight duals they competed in and placed four wrestlers in the unique Best of the Best competition. Unfortunately for the team, a close 32-30 loss to Uintah High School from Vernal, Utah, resulted in the Wolves taking second at their tournament.

"That kind of stung because we can't get it back," head coach Marshall Rhodes said.

In the Best of the Best, three completed the competition undefeated. Cyro Montoya and Jordan Tucker finished 8-0 while Kayce Cochrane lost a close match to finish at 6-2. Two other varsity wrestlers, Ira Dickinson and Nathan McCann, finished the weekend with only one loss.

In junior varsity competition, Cody Price, Nathan Campos, Nick Froats and John Makie were undefeated in their pools.

While the team wrestled strong throughout the weekend, Rhodes said the boys didn't wrestle with the intensity he expected.

"We had too many stalling calls and we didn't finish matches trying to score," Rhodes said. "We need to pick up our intensity when we head to Idaho Falls next week."

Rhodes also said he enjoyed seeing the hometown crowd supporting the team throughout the tournament.
