The Green River Middle School girls’ swimming and diving team
are on track for a repeat season as they continue to be undefeated in
competition.
Last year, the team not only captured the regional championship,
but were undefeated throughout the season. That team also broke a
number of middle school records during the season, something the
current team is repeating this season.
“It’s been a great season so far,” head coach Michele O’Meila, said.
“Everyone’s working hard.”
With more than half the season under its belt, the team continues
to dominate in the pool, holding five records and knocking at the
door of a sixth. The team is lead by times posted from Lauran Lee,
Lauren Jensen, Lillian Munoz and Jerra Lester. The four, working as
a team in the 200-yard medley relay, posted a record time of 2:03.70
earlier this year, while a team of Jensen, Lester, Genessa Timmons
and Lee recently broke the record in the 200-yard freestyle relay
with a time of 1:51.81.
Individually, Lee posted the record time in the 50-yard butterfly,
ending the event at 28.56. Earlier in the season, she also broke the
record in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 2:08.39. She broke it
again Tuesday in Rock Springs, finishing at 2.08.18. Munoz posted
a record 1:15.59 in the 100-yard backstroke event, while Jensen tied
the record for the 100-yard individual medley at 1:06.39. That record
was originally set in 2002 by Sinead O’Dwyer.
Outside swimming, O’Melia said Afton Spalding, the team’s top
diver, continues to do well in competition as well. She credits the
team’s competitiveness with involvement in the USA Swim program
as well as a dedication to the sport.
Complete results from the team’s most recent meet in Rock
Springs was not available as of press time.
