What comes to mind when you think of the Green River Recreation Center? Have you heard of us before? Do you know about all that we have to offer? What purpose does a community Recreation Center serve? Well let me share a bit or two with you.
The Leisure Programs and Green River Recreation Center divisions of the Parks and Recreation Department, work under the City of Green River to offer many great sports and activities for the community. Our mission is to create recreational opportunities through people, parks, and programs. We are located right next to the new Child Development Center and the Green River High School off Hitching Post Drive and Upland Way. We opened in December of 1986 and have been offering our services to the community ever since.
The front desk staff are the first faces you will see when you walk into our facility and the first to welcome you. Then, there are the supervisors that flow from the offices behind the front desk that are always willing to lend a helping hand, answer questions, or provide input.
Want to take a dip in the pool?
There you’ll meet our lifeguards alert and ever watchful; always greeting patrons and willing to answer any questions you may have. Our entire staff is willing to give assistance, answer questions or simply offer you the inside scoop on the best times to come in and use certain areas of the facility to best fit your needs or help you address what it is that you may be looking for. We would be remiss if we failed to mention our awesome maintenance staff, always busy keeping our facility in top notch condition and they too are always willing to stop, chat, answer questions, or simply ask you how your day is going. We receive many compliments on our staff and the great customer service they provide.
The Recreation Center has something unique that no other fitness facility in town offers, a swimming pool.
In addition to our lap pool, our 54,000 sq. ft. facility includes a sauna, hot tub, steam room, gymnasium, racquet ball courts, an inner and outer weight room, a cardio area where you can work up a sweat and we even have a staffed nursery. We have open swimming most hours of the day, during operating hours. We offer float times where you can float around our pool on an inner tube or play on our floating log and turtle features. We even have a seven-foot tall inflatable iceberg in the water on the first Saturday of every month and an inflatable obstacle course in the water, called the WIBIT, once a month. Also, there are water aerobics classes at 6:30 a.m., 8 a.m., 9:15 a.m., and 4 p.m. As mentioned amongst our many amenities, are a two-court wide gymnasium, three racquetball courts, a fourth racquetball court has been converted into a wallyball court most of the year.
Additionally, we have two meeting rooms, men and women locker rooms with separated shower stalls, and a workout room for the aerobics classes. City parks and recreation centers offer countless benefits to residents fortunate enough to have them in their neighborhoods.
They serve as an affordable place for people to exercise, enjoy accommodations, and spend time with their family and friends. People who live in towns with recreation centers feel a stronger sense of community than those living in areas without these facilities. It becomes a mutual ground where people can encounter others with common interests.
Recreation centers and parks are important to communities because they provide residents with a better quality of life, increase property values, attract tourists, and bring the community together.
The sports and activities offered vary throughout the year. You can pick up our bi-annual brochure that provides listing times of classes, activities, and our various events. Come visit and share your experience with families, friends and who knows, the neighbor next door. Check us out on Facebook, Instagram, newspaper stories, radio, and Channel 23 on cable.
The entire Parks and Recreation Department works hard to ensure that residents and visitors are aware of all that the City of Green River has to offer.
