Green River will have two new people joining the city council.
Robert Berg and Tom Murphy will assume their responsibilities in January at the first council meeting of the year. Murphy defeats Kenny Ball to replace Mark Peterson, who lost a bid for Sweetwater County Commissioner during the Primary Election in August. According to unofficial results from the Sweetwater County Clerk’s Office, Murphy earned 956 votes to Ball’s 766.
“He’s a nice young man, I’m happy he did as well as he did,” Murphy said of Ball.
For Murphy in Ward I, his biggest takeaway from the election is to listen to what the constituents want.
He said some city employees seek a raise in the coming budget year and others he spoke with would like to have a dog park built in the city. Murphy disagrees with the dog park idea, saying there is a lot of space outside the city for people to take their dogs, but would entertain the idea if someone would provide the land and funding for both construction and upkeep for the park.
Berg, who defeated incumbent Brett Stokes, said the race between him and Stokes couldn’t have been more pleasant. While conducting some door-to-door campaigning Saturday, Berg said he stopped by and chatted with both Stokes and his wife as he passed through Stokes’ neighborhood. Berg and Stokes had a tight race, with Berg overcoming Stokes 919 votes to 853.
“I couldn’t have asked for a better person to run against,” he said.
For Berg, his first goals are to recognize city volunteers and employees for the work they do and thank them.
For Sweetwater County School District No. 2, Steve Core, Brenda Roosa, Mark Sanders and Corina Tynsky were voted onto the district’s board of trustees. Roosa had the most votes, at 3,107 total, while Mark Sanders followed close behind with 3,098. Steve Core took third with 2,980, while Tynsky took the last open board seat with 2,744 votes. Kevin Gelinas finished last with 2,059 votes.
In local special districts, Robert Gordon, Reed Robbins and Lisa Robison will serve on the Castle Rock Hospital District Board of Trustees. The three will take three available board seats for the hospital district. For the Jamestown-Rio Vista Fire District, both David Buller and James Reinard will serve on the board’s two seats.
For the Jamestown-Rio Vista Water and Sewer District three of the four candidates won election. David Shillcox took the most votes with 128, while Robert Cudney and Dan Shedden finished second and third with 110 and 103 votes respectively. Delbert Poll finished last in the race, with 86 votes.
