The Green River High School football team left Torrington one step closer to a state title last week, beating the Trailblazers 27-21.
While Torrington took an early lead over the Wolves, the Wolves would claw their way back to a tie with a touchdown pass from Chance Hofer to Drew Wilson, ending in a 59-yard run. After the PAT, the Wolves would struggle to find the endzone the rest of the half, but continued scoring with well-placed field goals kicked by Hofer, ending the half 13-7 in the Wolves’ favor.
In the third quarter, the Wolves would score again off of a pass from Hofer to Devon Love for a 60-yard touchdown run. The run and subsequent PAT gave the Wolves a 13-point lead, which would soon shrink to six after a Trailblazers touchdown and PAT near the end of the third quarter.
In the fourth quarter, Candon Croft received a touchdown pass, bringing the score to 27-14 after the PAT from Hofer. Wilson would end up getting hurt during the fourth quarter as well, being replaced by James Bunderman. Torrington would score one more time before the end of the game, closing the gap to six points, but were unable to recover from the deficit by the end of the game.
The Wolves, being the third seed in the playoffs, will now travel to Powell to take on the Powell Panthers at 7 p.m. Friday. This situation mirrors the Wolves’ playoff season last year, as the team was forced to compete against Buffalo and Jackson on their home fields. If the Wolves win against Powell, they will take on the winner of the Star Valley-Douglas game in War Memorial Stadium Nov. 11. The Douglas Bearcats lost to the Braves 29-28 in their meeting earlier this year. Should Green River and Star Valley win this week, it will set the stage for a state championship rematch between the Wolves and Braves. Green River fell to the Braves in Laramie last year, as well as taking their only loss this year from the team during regular-season play.
