The Sweetwater County Library System is currently displaying the annual Sweetwater Quilters’ Exhibit.
This is an open show in which local quilters are encouraged to submit their work for the public to enjoy. This exhibit consists of 10 quilts designed as wall hangings and can be seen at the White Mountain Library now through November.
The participating quilters are Jeanne Allen, Nancy Vase, Becky Morrison, Mary Jane Matthews and Debbie Wolfe. As members of the local group “Sweetwater Piecemakers” last year they celebrated 25 years of quilting together.
The group meets several Saturdays a month to work on their individual projects and their business meeting for the Piecemakers is the fourth Tuesday of each month at White Mountain Library. Anyone interested in joining can contact one of the members or come to their meeting.
Vase’s piece titled “and a star to steer her by” is one of her original designs. It won an award at the Wyoming State Quilters Guild annual conference in 2001. The State Guild holds a challenge in which a selection of fabrics must be included and well as a theme. This quilt is about heritage and Vase thought of her grandmother and the sunflower fabric in one of the stars was a gift from her sister.
Many different techniques are featured in the quilts on display. “Fall Walk” by Allen uses a pictorial fabric panel and appliques leaves highlighted with metallic threads. Matthews hand painted the calla lily before adding other fabrics and quilting the wall hanging. Morrison combined strip pieced borders with appliqued teapots. Wolfe uses a technique called raw-edge applique and her tulip piece has beads embellishing the design.
The public is invited to visit the White Mountain Library gallery during its new hours of Monday through Thursday 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., Friday 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday noon to 5 p.m.
The Sweetwater County Library System encourages local and Wyoming artists to display their creative work at the White Mountain Library in Rock Springs and the Sweetwater County Library in Green River. A committee of library staff and community volunteers meet to review applications of interested artists and to schedule community shows. Interested individuals are encouraged to contact either library manager or Debora Soule at the Community Fine Arts Center.
