Calling all Sweetwater wizards

October is the month when most think of Halloween. Over here at the Sweetwater County Library, we think of Harry Potter. For years now, we have worked hard each October to create the best, most realistic, and most fun Harry Potter party for you. We love doing it and we hope you love coming to it.

The party starts at 1 pm.. on Saturday and this year, we’re celebrating “Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix,” the fifth book in the seven-book series. Everything is new this year – activities and crafts that you’ve never seen before. Begin by meeting Professor McGonagall and letting the Sorting Hat decide which house you belong in: Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Ravinclaw, or Slytherin.

Then meet up with Dumbledore’s Army and choose a side. Next you’ll be able to try your hand at quiditch in our quiditch training camp – watch out for the bludgers! Sneak by the thesterals and find your way in to Professor Umbridge’s Office where you’ll find a fun craft to make. Pick up your wand and spell book and practice casting the spells you’ve learned. Don’t forget to stop for a photo at Weasley Wizard Wheezes too!

Harry Potter has become a timeless literary character. Kids want to be him. Adults want to be him. He and his crew are relatable and the struggles they undergo can really translate to any time period, any age level, and any personality type.

If you haven’t already, here are a few Harry Potter websites and books to check out:

Pottermore.com is another of J.K. Rowling’s creations. You have to check this website out. There are tons of fun quizzes you can take. One will sort you into one of the houses, another will tell you what your patronus is. You’ll also find behind the scenes information and facts about the Harry Potter world you were not aware of. It’s a fun site. You’ll be on it for hours.

Get your hands on “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them” by Newt Scamander and learn about all of the creatures Harry learned about while he was at Hogwarts – this book is available for checkout at the library. Are you a fan of quiditch? If you are, you’ll have to borrow Quiditch Through the Ages by renowned quiditch player, Kennilworthy Whisp.

Don’t forget about J.K. Rowlin’s newest Harry Potter book, “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child.” We have a bunch of copies available for check out here at the library. Remember, this book is actually a script from a play so it’s quite different than the first seven Harry Potter books.

Dust off your Hogwarts cloaks and your quiditch helmets and come see us at the Sweetwater County Library on Saturday from 1-3 p.m. for our Harry Potter Party.
