Seniors may have noticed a new face at the Golden Hour Senior Center.
Summer Holdsworth took over the position as marketing and activities coordinator at GHSC about a month and a half ago.
Prior to moving to Rock Springs, Holdsworth worked in the oilfield in California. She said when the oilfield industry crashed, she didn’t know what to do. Her best friend and godchild lived in Rock Springs and she decided to move closer to her friend.
“I figured I’d give it a shot and see how small-town life is,” Holdsworth said.
Not only did Holdsworth work in the oilfield industry, but she worked in construction. One of her construction duties was planning ribbon-cutting and grand-opening ceremonies, so she is familiar with planning an event. Holdsworth was nervous about changing professions in a different industry, but everyone at the GHSC has been really welcoming and helpful.
She is getting used to the duties, but has already realized one of the biggest perks of the job is visiting with the seniors.
“I love their interaction, compassion and help,” Holdsworth said. “There are so many seniors who are active and there are regulars who are amazing.”
Holdsworth’s first big event was helping the center out with the business after hours the GHSC hosted with the Green River Chamber of Commerce. The biggest event Holdsworth had to plan for was the GHSC’s Hoedown dinner and dance, which took place Friday evening.
“Tonight’s my first fun event,” she said. “I had people help me with it.”
Holdsworth was surprised with the small attendance on the business-after hours event, but she was impressed with how many people attended the Hoedown. At the hoedown, seniors were having a great time, eating, dancing, socializing, playing bingo and having their photos taken at the hillbilly photo booth Holdsworth thought would be a good addition to the event. She was right, just about every attendee had their photo taken in the booth.
“That’s what makes me feel like I’m doing my job, when I see them having a good time,” she said.
Holdsworth is looking forward to meeting and getting to know more seniors and finding out what other activities they might like to try.
“It’s a very rewarding position,” she said.
