Residents complete fall project

Friday morning, a few Mission at Castle Rock residents were busy working on a patchwork project.

During this session of Crafts with Kathy Elliott, residents laid 3-inch to 4-inch pieces of precut fabric onto a tablecloth-sized orange fabric.

Elliott had spent most of Thursday evening cutting the fabric for the residents to use. The autumn-colored fabric, which had been cut into strips, had various designs on it. From pumpkins, leaves, flowers and acorns to checkered, polka dot and striped, the residents had a lot of fabric to choose from.

The patchwork tablecloths can be used for a table topper or for a dresser, Elliott said.

"All the colors go together, so you can't really do anything that looks awful," Elliott said.

Some of the residents were putting the cut fabric into straight lines, while others were making a quilt-type pattern. Elliott said they can do whatever they want as long as they overlap the fabric so it looks deliberate; and use more than one color.

"You can put them down however you want to," Elliott said. "If you want one that's longer, you can put two pieces together."

Tonya Keister, resident and regular craft participant, was joking with the other ladies about one of the patterns she liked the most.

"What's everybody else going to use?" Keister said. "I try to keep things light."

Once the residents had their patchwork laid out to their liking, they picked up each piece and glued it with fabric glue to the tablecloth. The participants were excited about how the projects turned out and couldn't wait to use them as decorations in their rooms.
