We all know that the older we become the need to stay active and healthy is an absolute priority in our lives (or, it should be). Our muscles and joints are pretty much a “use them or lose them” deal with our human bodies, which can decline in efficiency as we age, become injured, and sedate. Staying active can be difficult for these afflicted with injuries, dealing with arthritis, head trauma, and other physical challenges.
I learned how staying active after an injury was difficult, but soon learned of a solution! When I suffered a back injury at the tender age of 28, my doctor discussed some options in getting it to heal. One key thing to do was to strengthen my stomach muscles (core), because the stronger the core, means less stress for the back. She highly recommended taking a Rusty Hinges class, which is offered throughout the nation at recreation centers and at the YMCA. Anyone suffering from back pain will do just about anything to find relief, so I dashed down to local rec. center and enrolled. Little did I know then, that my new commitment to my health would change my life!
My first experience of doing Rusty Hinges happened! As I entered the temperature-controlled pool, I felt at ease. I never dreamed that I could exercise without pain, but that’s what happens at a Rusty Hinges class. The class is held in shallow water, about chest high, and is ideal for taking body-weight pressure off of bones and joints. The instructor sets up various exercises, working from the head to toe. The water’s density provides natural resistance, which allows for a vigorous workout with minimal effort. All the major muscles and joints are worked during class and I felt amazing afterward. It gave me a new lease on life.
Rusty Hinges certainly benefits seniors, but it’s for many types of folks in all walks of life. It is awesome for expecting mothers who experience extreme demand on their bones, joints, and muscles; It’s great for pre and post-surgery patients; It’s perfect for anyone battling their weight; it’s the best for arthritis, etc.; and a host of other physical ailments. (I’ve seen people come in on crutches and take a class, leaving elated!) This is all because of the buoyancy of the water. The strengthening of the body the class provides is quite phenomenal. As time went on, I felt better and better, I began making friends from class too. It became somewhat of a very welcome social hour, something I looked forward to every session.
It has been 14 years ago since I started Rusty Hinges, and as I joined my husband when he traveled to various states for work, I almost always found classes at the local YMCAs or rec. centers. When I planted my roots in Green River, I found that there was no Rusty Hinges program, and inquired if I could instruct a class. I thought to myself, “why not?!” After all, I know that program inside and out. I’m pleased to say that I am returning as a Rusty Hinges instructor at the Rec. Center; I get to see my new friends and serve that community too! A win-win deal for me.
As with any exercise program, please consult your doctor before partaking.
