Children explore planes at GR's Spaceport Days

Residents and children had the chance to look at small planes at the Greater Green River Intergalactic Spaceport Saturday.

During fourth annual Spaceport Day, children and their parents were encouraged to have breakfast, eat a cookie, drink some water or juice and make their way over to the planes. Though most of the planes were small one and two-person planes, the children thought they were huge.

Some of the pilots were kind enough to let the children climb into the planes to look at the instruments and turn the steering wheels. The children were excited and started talking about what it would be like to be a pilot.

In the morning, the planes were landing and taking off every few minutes and many children just sat at the tables eating burritos, drinking water and watching the planes.

Residents also had the opportunity to purchase a raffle ticket for a chance to win a frisbee or T-shirt. Children were given huge stickers with the spaceport logo on it.

According to city administrator Reed Clevenger, Green River's spaceport is one of the top 10 unique airports, as voted by the pilots in Flying Magazine. The spaceport is located about 5 miles south of town on a gravel road. It is usually only marked by one, small green sign with an airplane on it, but Saturday on the turn to the airport a huge inflatable alien was attached to a pole.

This was to ensure those wanting to attend Spaceport Days would not miss the turn. The event was hosted by the Green River Airport Task Force Committee and Advisory Board. According to Clevenger, this event is fully funded by a grant from the WYDOT Aeronautics Division, helps bring in people, planes, and enthusiasts to the area. On Saturday, a woman Gillette pilot landed at the Spaceport for the event.
