Weather doesn't stop runners

It was a chilly, but wind-free morning Saturday as the runners lined up for the Run With the Horses marathon, half marathon and 10K.

Shortly before sunrise, a group of about 127 runners from across the country started running the race at Expedition Island. The group then ran up to Wild Horse Canyon Road and made their way along the gravel Wild Horse Loop Tour.

John Pawleska, Riverfest and Green River Chamber of Commerce volunteer, said the turnout was less then last year, but that could have been attributed to the colder than normal temperatures, which was at about 45 degrees that morning.

The marathon was 26.2 miles, while the half marathon was 13.1 miles and the 10K was 6.2 miles.

"We had a lot of 10K runners last year," Pawleska said.

He said this could be because a lot of the runners who usually participate in the 10K are local and have ran it a few times already.

Along the run, participants encountered friends and family members cheering them on. Some of them had running partners, while others decided to complete the race solo. Those who were in the 10K were already on their way back down as some of the slower-paced marathon runners were making their way toward the Wild Horse Loop portion of the race.

A couple of runners joked about a runner going the wrong way as they continued to make their way up the hill. Other runners were wondering if the entire race was going to be uphill since they had gone about 3 miles and hadn't started leveling out yet.

As for the marathon, Pawleska said they had a pretty good turnout. He said a lot of marathons across the country have a time limit of five hours and then they pick up and leave whether or not the runners are done. At this race, one third of them came in after the five-hour mark.

At this race, Pawleska and a group of supporters make sure every runner is accounted for.

"We stay there the whole time," Pawleska said. "I follow the last person in."

Marathon runner Jason Crompton of Rock Springs stood out to Pawleska. Crompton finished the marathon first with a time of 3:18:10.8, which is pretty impressive for the 26.2-mile race.

"Only one person has ever broke three hours out of 13 years running this," Pawleska said.

As in the past, some of the first marathoners were able to see about 40 wild horses on their run. The race kicked off at 6:30 a.m. and the last runner crossed the finish line 8 hours and 35 minutes later.

Pawleska said there were a couple of people who walked the entire marathon route and the last one was one of those. Despite crossing the line much later than most, the runner was greeted with the same applause and congratulations as the other marathoners were.
