Seniors enjoy low-impact exercises

Seniors were moving and grooving to the music during a low-impact exercise class.

On Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 9:15 a.m. seniors can be seen dancing in the cafeteria to fun music at the Golden Hour Senior Center.

Monday morning was no different, about six ladies were dancing to routines from popular music like Sheppard's "Geronimo" and Taio Cruz' "Dynamite" and songs from Shakira and Tina Turner.

When the ladies were having problems learning new moves they were just encouraged to keep marching in place.

During some of the dances, the ladies clapped and in others they side stepped or swayed their arms back and forth.

All of the movements were meant to be low impact so participants wouldn't hurt their joints.

Class participant Linda Dennison said she enjoys the hour-long classes filled with dance routines, however she especially likes the end of the class where they work on stretching and balancing.

"If I am missing it for a few weeks, my balance isn't as good," Dennison said.

Like any class, this class has a few favorites, including Taio Cruz "Dynamite."

The Tina Turner song the class dances to wasn't one of Dennison's favorite songs at first, but now it is one of her favorites. She said it was just really challenging getting the footwork and movements down.

"The low impact is a lot healthier," Dennison said. "It's very motivating. You can do more."

Dennison enjoys going to the morning classes with her friends.

"It's fun because everyone is doing it. Where if I was at home I might quit," Dennison said.

After each song, the class participants would stop to drink water, catch their breath or talk to each other. As soon as they heard the next song, they would go back to the line and start dancing again.
