Notes from Town Square: A voice on art in our community

What is art? Who defines art? What makes something a work of art?

These are questions that people have been asking for centuries. The more important question is, “what does art mean to you?”

If you study art from the beginning of time until now you will not see two artists recognized for doing the same thing. The intriguing part is, art is what you make of it! We all have something in us that makes us an artist; it is our own minds and ideas. Whether you work with your hands building, decorate your home, think of creative ways to reach people or take photographs.

Art has always been an important voice of culture it can play an important role in our lives at any age. Through creating or viewing art we learn to solve problems, think critically, comprehend or interpret what we see, think outside the box and even relieve stress. It is never too late to try something new.

Even if you are not ready to break out the paint or materials yourself, I encourage you to invite your friends and come down to Expedition Island Aug. 19-20 to show your support of the arts. The City of Green River has continued to show their commitment to creating a community of art and culture through their sculptures and events. One of the most unique events that we host in Green River is Art on the Green. At this event our city’s art council pulls together more than 37 artists from all over the State to compete in 24 hours of art creation along with other art activities and auctions.

Art has always played an important role in my life as an art educator and artist myself. I have met many people and often heard them voice their feelings of art with statements such as: I am not good at art, I am not creative, or I love art and I “used” to really enjoy art. If you are one who finds enjoyment in creating art, I urge you to make time. For those who think they are not talented enough to create art, I say, to be an artist there are two requirements: the willingness to take a risk and an active imagination.

You never know what you’re capable of until you try it. My students continue to surprise me with their creativity and the endless possibilities in art. I urge you also to recognize how having art around us makes life more interesting. So take the time to engage your imagination.

It is not just for kids. Come support local artists or get inspired at the island for this year’s Art on the Green Aug. 19-20.
