The girls on the Green River Chaos U12 Rec. team had an emotional victory in Gillette over the weekend, clenching a state championship win in the Wyoming Amateur Softball Association tournament after falling short of the prize for the last two years.
"It was an amazing journey for these young ladies," coach Trin De LaO, said.
The team took third during last year during the tournament in Casper, and a second-place finish two years ago in Riverton. Their first year competing in the tournament resulted the girls being "blown out" in Cheyenne, according to De LaO.
The girls were undefeated in the tournament, defeating Lander 12-2 and Laramie 9-2 Friday, defeating Lander and Laramie a second time Saturday, with scores of 16-4 and 6-5 respectively, and defeating Laramie a third time Sunday 12-4 during a double-elimination final.
The girls were forced to deal with a heat wave in Gillette during the competition, with De LaO describing temperatures as high as 103 degrees being measured on the turf field. He said the girls suffered from headaches during some of their games and had to keep well-hydrated with sports drinks to combat the effects of the heat.
The undefeated state win caps the team's years of competition in the U12 division. Next year, the team will be in the U14 division.
The team doesn't travel for competition, which places them in the recreational division. There is another U12 division for traveling softball teams.
