United Way prepares for Helping Hands Day

United Way of Southwest Wyoming is calling for projects and volunteers for its annual Helping Hands Day on Aug. 27.

“Helping Hands Day is a volunteer event where we gather projects from local non-profit organizations, senior citizens and people with disabilities, and then teams go out and complete the projects for them,” Executive Co-Director Kelly Frink said.

The number of volunteers usually ranges from 150 to 200 people.

“A lot of them are workplace teams,” Frink said of the volunteers, but any interested people can volunteer. Teams are also often made up of families, sports teams, Boy Scout troops, church groups and individuals.

United Way is currently in search of projects and volunteers. Project request forms are due by Friday, July 8 at the United Way office in Rock Springs. Projects are most often building and home improvements, but they can be a variety of tasks. In past years, projects have included pulling weeds, painting, replacing windows and building or fixing furniture, laying gravel driveways, electrical repairs and moving furniture and other items. One team hosted an ice cream social for the residents of Mansface Terrace as a project as well.

Helping Hands Day is Aug. 27, but projects can be completed on days that are more convenient for volunteer teams.

Volunteers are encouraged to get in touch with the individual or organization to schedule a day that is convenient for everyone.

Materials for the projects can be supplied by the teams or United Way can supply them with the help of event sponsors.

“A lot of the project materials are supplied by the individual or agency, they just need help completing the projects,” Frink said.
