Knights take 3rd in GR tournament

The Green River Knights finish with third place at the end of an invitational tournament the team hosted during the weekend.

The Knights started strong Saturday afternoon with an impressive 10-3 win over the Douglas Cats. Tyler Vendetti led off with a double to left, followed by Trevor Zumwalt who placed a bunt down the third base line.

Brendan Hopkins then drove in Vendetti and Zumwalt to go up 2-0. Blake Gelinas followed with a solid single to left to jump out to a 3-0 lead.

The Cats got on the scoreboard in the top of the second, scoring two runs but the Knights came right back in the bottom of the second with a single by Ian Ebert who promptly stole second base and scored Green Rivers forth run on Vendetti's second hit of the game with a line shot double to centerfield. Green River continued the barrage with another double by Zumwalt to drive in Vendetti to make it 5-2.

In the forth inning Green River's Andrew Munoz doubled to center to increase the lead, with Blake Gelinas scoring on a passed ball by the Douglas catcher increasing the lead to 7-3.

Green River sealed the victory as they continued their strong hitting as Brendan Hopkins led off the sixth inning with another extra base hit as he doubled to left to drive in both Zumwalt and Munoz. Gelinas singled to left to move Hopkins into scoring position with a Douglas fielding error resulting in Hopkins coming home for the another run with the final score being 10-3.

In the second game of the day in 90-degree heat and taking on their nemesis the well rested, Jackson Giants, the Knights battled the whole way but fell for the fourth time this season 9-6. Jackson used patient hitting with smart base running , an excellent defense and solid pitching to clinch the win.

Sunday morning the Knights took on Price, Utah defeating them 9-1 with a strong seven inning pitching performance from Blake Gelinas and the return of sold hitting.

On Sunday afternoon the Knights met their cross county arch rivals from Rock Springs the Archie Hay Post 24 Sand Puppies in a game for third place. Green River went into the game having played Rock Springs several times without a loss. Rock Springs took the lead 1-0 into the bottom of the first. In the bottom of the first McCaden Miksell singled to left followed by Andrew Munoz who singled to center. Blake Gelinas then singled to drive in Miksell with Munoz coming home on a passed ball to put the Knights up 2-1.

The Sand Puppies lost no time tying the game in the top of the second. The sore stayed at 2-2 until the bottom of the seventh when Miksell singled with two outs, Munoz got on and Hopkins walked. Blake Gelinas, who was one of several Knights with a strong hitting performance in the tournament, then singled to center to drive in Miksell with the winning run and a third place finish.

With their three wins and one loss, the Knights moved to 20-10 on the season with their next games being a double-header Wednesday against Rawlins.
