The election for the House District 60 seat in the Wyoming Legislature may have ended before it began as the Republican challenger in that race will resign.
Bill Hooley will resign from both the race and his position as chairman of the Sweetwater GOP, planning a to move to American Fork, Utah, for a new job opportunity. Hooley challenged incumbent Democrat John Freeman for his seat. It would have been the second time the two faced off in an election.
Hooley sought to replace Freeman two years ago, but fell short of that attempt by 289 votes.
Hooley said another Republican is considering an August write-in campaign to be placed on the November ballot. He declined to identify the individual, but said Freeman may still face a challenge for his seat.
In order for a Republican to mount a challenge against Freeman, they would have to conduct a write-in campaign and get at least 25 votes before being placed on the November ballot.
Hooley is the second Green River resident to withdraw from the upcoming elections.
Green River City Councilman Ted Barney announced his decision to withdraw from the Sweetwater County Commissioners race last week.
