Knights' success continues in Rock Springs

After winning the Roy Peck Memorial Tournament in Riverton the previous weekend, the Green River Knights were ready for action at the Sand Puppy American Legion Tournament last weekend in Rock Springs.

Despite being short three regulars, two to illness and one playing in the Wyoming Shrine Bowl Game, Green River started tournament play with a strong performance, beating the host team Archie Hay Post No. 24 11-4. Saturday evening the Knights played the team coach Stub Hatfield called the Knights’ nemesis, losing to Jackson 8-4. It was the Knights’ third loss to Jackson this season.

Green River came back Sunday morning with a solid performance both pitching and hitting for an impressive 12-0 win over the Rock Springs B Team.

Their second win of the tourney set them up for a possible berth in the championship game, but one of the worst hail storms in a long time hit Sweetwater County. The hail, along with the rain and dangerous lightning, ended the tourney early as the final games had to be cancelled.

Many of the same teams however will be back in action this weekend, as the Green River Knights 18th Annual Invitational Baseball Tournament comes to Green River, Friday through Sunday.

Joining Green River are Rock Springs, Riverton, Jackson, Rawlins, Evanston and Douglas all of whom have been playing each other these past two weekend tournaments. An eighth team from Price, Utah will complete the field.

Games are scheduled to be played at both Stratton Meyers Field and Veterans Park with Green River competing in the A pool with Rawlins, Jackson and Douglas, while the B Pool is made up of Riverton, Evanston, Rock Springs and Price. The championship game scheduled for 2:30 p.m. Sunday at Stratton Meyers Field.

The Knights go into the tournament with a solid 17-9 record on the season. Weather is predicted to be in the 80s with plenty of sunshine.
