Funds raised at senior yard sale

The weather couldn't have been better for the Golden Hour Senior Center's Yard Sale and Vendor Fair.

On Saturday morning Green River residents strolled through the GHSC's parking lot looking for bargains and things they just couldn't live without.

The GHSC sold baked goods, including cinnamon rolls, cream puffs, cookies, bars and numerous breads, as a way to raise funds for the center. With the busy day over, employees set to work tallying up how much was raised, which came in at around $1,000.

"With budget cuts, it's vital that we do the fundraisers," GHSC executive director Sheela Schermetzler said. "This is the kickoff to all of our fundraising activities."

With a nice, sunny day, the turnout was great. A lot of the vendors had already sold quite a few items with a few more hours to go. The vendors sold jewelry, candles, wooden crosses, walking sticks, piggy banks, paintings and other artwork. The GHSC also sold coffee cups, a ping-pong table and various items.

Other tables had more garage-sale type items, including books, DVDs, CDs and things the seniors didn't have a use for anymore.

Employees at the center hope the success of this first fundraiser continues throughout the season.

Other fundraising events the center will host includes a pancake breakfast June 25, before the Flaming Gorge Days parade, and a baked-goods sale that same day.

They will also sell homemade baked goods at the Green River Farmers Market.

"At the farmers market, we sell out," Schermetzler said. "When it's gone; we pull up the tent and we're gone."

Schermetzler was proud to say the center's booth is one of the most popular booths at the market.
