Shot fired on Railroad Ave. Sunday

An incident at a residence on West Railroad ended with one person shot and another arrested Sunday.

Ted Kalivas, 57, of Green River was arrested Sunday night after allegedly shooting his daughter’s boyfriend in the leg. Kalivas made his initial appearance before Circuit Court Judge John Prokos Monday to a felony charge of aggravated assault and battery, which carries a maximum penalty of not more than 10 years in prison and a fine of not more than $10,000. He is being held at the Sweetwater County Detention Center on a $20,000 Cash-or-surety bond.

According to court documents, officers from the Green River Police Department responded to 190 West Railroad Ave.,after receiving reports of two people fighting and shots fired at the residence. At the scene, officer Shantell Erickson noticed David Maestas was receiving treatment by an ambulance crew for a gunshot wound to his leg. Maestas told Erickson he was asleep in his bedroom when Kalivas entered the room and told him he “needed to ‘leave now and not move too fast.’”

Maestas told Erickson he didn’t know what happened, but heard a gun discharge and was initially unaware of being wounded by a firearm.

Kalivas, during an interview at the GRPD, told officers he initially went to his daughter’s residence to check on her and took a pistol with him because he was afraid of Maestas, her boyfriend. He claimed he took the gun only as a scare tactic. After entering the residence, he walked into the bedroom where he found Maestas lying on the bed. Kalivas said he pointed the gun at Maestas and Maestas stood up and punched Kalivas. As fe hell, Kalivas said the gun fired accidentally.

Erickson while searching Kalivas prior to arresting him, found a W-W45 auto casing in Kalivas’ front left pocket.
