GR defeats tough Tigers squad

Facing their Sweetwater County rivals on their home turf, the Green River High School boys soccer team knew they had a hard match ahead of them.

Leaving Tigers Stadium Friday with a 1-0 win was the best result they could have hoped for, but head coach Chris Beiber said the team could have done better in a few areas.

“They competed in every way,” Beiber said. “They wanted the ball more than we did.”

Beiber said the team expected Rock Springs’ style of play after watching the Tigers play during the invitational tournament hosted in Green River last month, as well as from his discussions with other coaches from teams that previously played against Rock Springs.

Despite knowledge from those sources, Beiber said the Tigers played a challenging game against the Wolves.

Beiber said the entire team contributed to the victory in Rock Springs. Beieber said the defense players did a great job in winning every ball kicked by the Rock Springs goal keeper.

As the season winds down, the Wolves will take to the road more in the coming weeks. The Wolves have won their last five games and are undefeated, though they do have four tied games on their record.

Tomorrow, the Wolves travel to Evanston on the Red Devils’ home turf. That game is followed by a trip to Riverton Saturday for a second away game. The Wolves have bested both teams earlier this season, with Green River beating Evanston 2-0 April 5 and winning 2-1 against Riverton April 8. While the team has won against both teams, Beiber still expects more challenging matches from both teams as the Wolves are the visiting team this week.

However, he said as long as the wolves stick to the fundamentals and put forth the effort and work ethic, they shouldn’t experience any setbacks this weekend.
