The Green River High School Boys Soccer team walked away from the field as champions of the bronze bracket of the tournament Green River hosted over the weekend, but difficulties making goals prevented the team from winning games their head coach felt the team could win.
The boys took part in the Southwest High School Boys Soccer Tournament, which took place at Wolves Stadium and the two Monroe Intermediate School fields.
Friday, the Wolves tied each of the three games they competed in. The Wolves tied with Pinedale and Buffalo in scoreless games, then tied with Worland 1-1. Beiber said the tie with Worland was disappointing because Worland's score was the result of an own goal from the Wolves.
During bracket play on Saturday, the Wolves' fortunes reversed and the team was able to come away with a few victories, which sealed their top position in the bronze bracket.
Green River battled against Cody and earned a 1-0 win and won their second game against Rawlins, also with a 1-0 score.
Beiber said the team has work to do if it is going to reach the level he hopes the players will be at near the end of the season.
Coming out of the tournament, he believes the two biggest lessons the team learned involved motivation and drive in playing their games.
While the Wolves' defensive game is strong enough for Beiber to be comfortable pitting the strategy against any team in the state, the offensive side of the game continues to get tweaked. Beiber said he changed some of the team's offensive strategy Monday and looks forward to the upcoming home games against Natrona County and Kelly Walsh high schools this weekend.
The Natrona game starts at 3 p.m. Friday while the Kelly Walsh game takes place at noon Saturday.
